Acts 8:14-18
14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the aword of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:
15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:
16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)
17 Then alaid they their hands on them, and they received the bHoly Ghost.
18 And when Simon saw that through alaying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money,

Some state that water baptism is not necessary.  They propose that when the scriptures speak of baptism they speak of being baptized by the spirit.  Acts 8:14-18 points out that baptism and receiving the Holy Ghost are two different ordinances.  It states that the Holy Ghost had fallen on none and they had only been baptized.
John 7:39
39 (But this spake he of the aSpirit, which they that believe on him should receive: bfor the Holy Ghost was not yet 'given''; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
'
Jesus preached baptism, yet the Holy Ghost was given to them yet, so the baptism he was commanding them to be baptized with was not the Holy Ghost.
'
16 He that abelieveth and is bbaptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be cdamned.

It says he that believes AND is baptized shall be saved. Two points. One, you must do something as well as believe to be saved. Two, one of those things is baptism.

Luke 7:30
30 But the Pharisees and lawyers arejected'' the counsel of God bagainst themselvesbeing not cbaptized' of him.
The counsel of God was to be baptized with the baptism of John the baptist. John baptized with water and by immersion.

John 3:5
'
5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be aborn of bwater and of the cSpirit, he cannot denter into the kingdom of God.
Matthew 3:13-15
13 ¶ Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to beabaptized of him.
14 But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?
15 And Jesus answering said unto him, aSuffer it to be so now: for thus it bbecometh us to cfulfil all drighteousness. Then he suffered him.
If it was necessary for Jesus to be baptized to fulfill all righteousness, then why would it not be necessary for us? What was the purpose if not to show us the way?
Moroni 6:4  4 And after they had been received unto baptism, and were wrought upon and acleansed by the power of the Holy Ghost, they were numbered among the people of the bchurch of Christ; and their cnames were taken, that they might be remembered and nourished by the good word of God, to keep them in the right way, to keep them continually dwatchful unto prayer, erelying alone upon the merits of Christ, who was the author and the finisher of their faith.
